Last Goodbye
Ah. First day at the new job and the first review in a long time. And what would be a better way to resume than with one of the best albums of all time? 2006 was a curious year as it produced two of the highest quality albums I own, this and Kim Hyun Jung's Dance with Hyun Jung. Needles(s) to say, this will be a surefire bellefire 10.
#1 Last Goodbye 10
Their lead tracks have followed a steady progression ever since Wa0th Me? and this is once again clearly a descendant of Dangerous. Can you go wrong with that? Not really. If I had to decide, however, I'd say both Alive and Dangerous are still slightly better.
#2 World for 2 10
This seemed like the obvious second single but they ended up spicing up the pattern by opting for Without Breaking instead, which may well have been a good choice, as this offers nothing new, almost to the point of provoking me to give a 9½.
#3 Soon My Heart 10
It's cunning how on this album they've tried to get variation into their song titles by using partial phrases, like this and Without Breaking. I think it's rather an elegant idea that I've used myself. After all, I've written a story called Melko... :O
#4 Give Me Your Hand 9
Following the aforementioned principle, maybe this could've been called Your Hand? That reminds me that I should acquire Pink's U + Ur Hand (as I think it might be spelled) that Pia introduced to me through her classes. Oh dance, beginning today as well, how I've missed you. Incidentally enough, it'll do so with Pia proper. In any case, I've just avoided commenting what is probably DB's best midtempo and the highest placed one in track order.
#5 Tell Me No Lies 9½
I don't know what to say about this particular track as it's not so very different from the others. Let the score speak for itself.
#6 Without Breaking 10
I haven't confirmed my suspection of this track's single status. Let's see... Oh yes. The most interesting feature is how the first chord change of the chorus is delayed past its usual point of occurence, which creates a powerful suspension.
#7 Life Is Good 10
Way me for typing "Life Is Goo". Oh oh, I so must make a song with that or a similar name. That reminds me of "Hän oli kaunis kuin kissan röyhtäys", which I also must use somewhere. This is DB's best song in majors since I'll Give You All the Love and Can You Feel the Same Way Too. As per the third single, I've received contradictory information between World for 2 and Soon My Heart. I'd pick the latter, for reasons mentioned above.
#8 Together We Got the Power 9
Nice but not horribly interesting. It's kinda shame that the DB happy songs have fallen into dismay these days.
#9 The Echo 9
What I said about #8 applies here as well. It bothers me that the first majors-dominated tracks have been piled here next to one another. At least LIG could've been somewhere higher.
#10 Live My Life with You 8
The first sounds remind me of Atomia Litten's Cradle but the rest doesn't live up to the image.
#11 Here I Am 7½
The token moody existential track.
#12 Last Goodbye (Remix) 6
What oh what are these useless remixes for? Granted, this isn't outright as horrible as the Tô Zalhêpwa one on Dance with Hyun Jung but almost. Ugh.
